Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore ¡°Taeoom¡±, a unique culture of workplace bullying, experienced by Korean nurses.
Methods: A qualitative meta-synthesis suggested by Noblit and Hare was conducted in this study. Five qualitative studies were chosen and synthesized to describe Korean nurses¡¯ experiences with Taeoom.
Results: The overarching theme was ¡°vices which result in resignation¡±, and four themes were synthesized: (a) the inevitable inertia of the hierarchical structure, (b) enduring the rites of passage in connivance, (c) the challenging gap between different positions, and (d) the work of nursing that is being a burden to each other.
Conclusion: The findings of this study highlight the need to accurately recognize the causes of Taeoom. This study suggests that the efforts of organizational change to recognize the factors that lead to Taeoom are being taken away from the perspective of recognizing Taeoom as part of natural socialization in the nursing profession.
